I’ve tried a few store bought gummies and while many of them have health benefits, they often contain sugar.
If you’ve read any of my other blogs, you know I’m not opposed to sugar. However, if I can avoid sugary treats in my house, I will.
Cue these fruity gelatin gummies. I make them in three different flavours: pineapple and coconut, strawberries and cream and apple and cinnamon.
The pineapple and coconut flavour is my favourite, but my older two love the apple and cinnamon. I like to create different flavours to meet the varying tastebuds of my three kids. If you struggle to feed your kids healthy snacks, because they don’t usually like them; you’re not alone. If I make something, one of my kids will most likely not be a fan. And that’s okay! It’s all about exposure and eventually they come around to liking it.
For example, my eldest daughter has never been a fan of coconut, but recently she has asked me to bake her apples drenched in coconut oil – go figure!
Let’s have a look at why gelatin is a great food to add into your kids’ diets…
The health benefits of gelatin
Gelatin contains collagen which makes up the connective tissue of your intestinal tract, helping to strengthen and seal its protective lining. Collagen also supports immunity and digestion.
Studies have found that those with inflammatory digestive imbalances have a decreased collagen production (study). So consuming collagen regularly for kids with food sensitivities and intolerances is key.
Gelatin found in collagen promotes healthy skin and joints (which is what it is commonly known for). Because collagen is one of the primary components that make up skin, consuming collagen via diet can help to ensure that your body is producing enough of it.
It’s important to choose a high quality gelatin powder for these gummies. We use the Nutraorganics brand and have always trusted their brand for high quality products.

Pineapple and Coconut Gummy Recipe
Method
- Whisk pineapple juice and coconut milk together.
2. Add in gelatin and whisk until combined.
3. Pour recently boiled water into mixture and stir until well combined.
4. Pour pineapple mixture into molds to set into the refrigerator for at least an hour.
Strawberries and Cream Gummy Recipe
I must admit, the strawberries and cream flavour is probably the most tasteless out of the three. My son and I don’t mind the flavour, but for those kids who are on the pickier side, I would suggest adding about a tablespoon of honey for extra natural sweetness.
Method
- Blend strawberries and coconut milk into blender until smooth.
2. Add gelatin to mixture and whisk.
3. Add boiling water to mixture and stir until well combined.
4. Pour strawberry mixture into molds to set into the refrigerator for at least an hour.
Apple and Cinnamon Gummy Recipe
This is probably the simplest method of the three because it eliminates the boiling water step, as the stewed apples are already hot enough for the gelatin to mix into.
- Stew the apples in a saucepan over medium heat until soft.
2. Once apples are soft, you can choose to keep the warm water for the recipe or dispose it. Either way, pour apples into blender and mix with cinnamon and gelatin until well blended.
3. Pour apple and cinnamon mixture into molds to set in the fridge for at least an hour.
Once all flavours are set in their molds…
You can take them out of their molds and store them in a glass container or choose to leave them and take them out of their molds when consumed as desired.
Ways to serve the Gelatin Gummies
You can easily take them out of their molds and serve as is. However, for us, I like to make sure they last at least a few days, so I cut them up into bite sized pieces and place them into my kids’ snack boxes either in the morning or the afternoon.
The great thing about making three batches at once is that they do last longer and with only little preparation involved.
Notes
If you read the method carefully, you would have noticed that I stirred in the gelatin for the strawberries and cream recipe. You can choose to skip this step and blend the gelatin in with the strawberries and coconut milk in the blender.
For the strawberries and cream recipe, it can be quite bland depending on your batch of strawberries. If you have a blander batch of strawberries, add in about a tablespoon of honey to naturally sweeten it. I learnt that the hard way!
If you choose not to use coconut milk for either the pineapple and coconut or strawberries and cream, you can choose to use plain yoghurt or alternative milk for this. You may just need to adjust the measurements depending on what you use.
For the apple and cinnamon recipe, I found that putting about 1 and a half cups of apples in meant that I didn’t need to use some of the water for the recipe, but if you only have about one cup of stewed apples, then use about 1/4 cup of water for the recipe.
