This healthy creamy almond coconut mousse is rich in flavour, creamy in texture and filled with healthy good fats! If you are a mama wanting a healthy and filling snack, this is it!
Here at The Wholesome Mama Nutrition, I am all about gut-friendly foods that taste good and are nourishing for the body. This dessert ticks both boxes! And I’ll share with you why shortly.
I am such a sweet tooth, but over the years have made some conscious decisions to eat better because when I do, I feel better. I am a better person, wife, mama and friend when I am eating foods that are nourishing.
I love that this mousse recipe is dairy and gluten free! And I love how simple it is to make.
If you are a mama of little ones, you know how busy life can get. I love baking in the kitchen, but it is a luxury when I can bake something without being interrupted 2300 times.
My kids often get involved in the baking and cooking, which I love! But because of my kids’ nut allergies, this dessert is just for mama only (when the kids are in bed! Shhh!)

The benefits of almond and coconut
Almond: almonds are a great source of fat, protein and Vitamin E. It is known to lower cholesterol levels, regulate blood sugar levels and contains antioxidants (protects against inflammation).
Since I am allergic to peanuts, I use almonds as an alternative in recipes. I love almond butter and add it to my many snacks (including these delicious choc nut bars) and my morning smoothie.
Handy tip: When using almonds in a recipe, it is best to soak them with baking powder and water/lemon and water (for about 4-6 hours) to reduce phytic acid absorption (which is an anti-nutrient that inhibits the absorption of other nutrients).
Coconut: coconut is a superfood in my opinion, because it contains medium-chain triglycerides. This means that the fat content in coconut has antimicrobial, antiviral and antifungal properties. It contains potassium, which balances out excess sodium in the body and is a wonderful anti-inflammatory food source.
I am not a huge fan of drinking or eating coconut on its own, but when coconut is infused into a dish or dessert, I love it. I also try to incorporate it into foods because of its health benefits.
What equipment is needed for this recipe
Since this recipe is simple, you won’t need much equipment, just:
- Mixing bowl
- Whisk
- Glass/ceramic baking pan
- Cling wrap
Ingredients for this recipe
- Coconut cream
- Almond butter (or your choice of nut butter)
- Maple syrup
- Dark choc chips
- Optional: desiccated coconut or hemp seeds for extra nutrient value
Method
- Combine coconut cream and almond butter in a medium sized bowl.
2. Pour in maple syrup and stir to combine.
3. Pour mousse into a ceramic pan.
4. Sprinkle with dark choc chips or topping of choice.
5. Cover with cling wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour to set before serving.
6. Serve mousse in bowls or cups to your liking.
Notes about recipe
- You can definitely change the recipe by adding Greek yoghurt rather than coconut cream and changing the nut butter to suit your preference. I like that this is a dairy free option, as I know how difficult it can be to find a dairy-free mousse recipe.
- I cannot emphasise how important it is to use a whisk rather than a wooden spoon when mixing the ingredients together. You can also use a hand held beater, but I’ve only ever used a whisk for this recipe and it always comes together perfectly.
- You can also use a different sweetener to maple syrup. Agave syrup or honey are great alternatives. I would avoid using any sort of sugar as this would significantly change the texture and is not as natural in sweetness as maple syrup is.
- You can serve the mousse in cups or pop it into a ceramic dish, as I have done. I find that serving it in cups works better if you are hosting and eating this for dessert. A ceramic dish is less clean up if you are just making it for yourself at home.
- I like adding dark choc chips as a topper. However, you can add any toppers like desiccated coconut, hemp seeds, banana or crushed nuts.
