This tastiest chocolate milk recipe is super satisfying and simultaneously good for your gut health! Find out why in the recipe below.
I love a good hot chocolate during the colder months, especially if it’s thick and creamy like this one recipe is!
That’s when I came across this recipe through a friend, I instantly fell in love. It’s not only delicious, but good for your gut. I’m all about foods that are good for your gut.
It’s also a great sweet alternative to your typical chocolate milk or sweet craving, because it has no artificial sweeteners in it.
It’s a simple recipe that will only take 5 minutes to make. I can guarantee that you have 95% of the ingredients on hand!
Let’s explore why it’s so good for your gut…
Why it’s good for your gut
First of all, it contains collagen, an undeniably rich nutrient in protein, glutamine and darn good for your gut (my go-to is the vanilla collagen by Nutraorganics)
Second of all, it contains butter (grass-fed is best), an excellent source of fat and calcium and is a great sugar-stabiliser.
It contains real cacao, which is one of the highest sources of magnesium (supporting muscular and bone health) and makes for a rich taste.
And it has no artificial sweeteners, containing only pure maple syrup, which makes it sweet enough anyway!
Swaps you can make
If you don’t have any of these ingredients on hand, you can try these also:
Ghee or coconut oil instead of butter
Agave syrup or honey instead of maple syrup
Carob powder or pure cocoa powder instead of cacao powder
Alternative milk: almond, oat, goat, cashew etc. (You may just need to adjust the measurements of the other ingredients if you choose to use an alternative milk, since cow’s milk is generally creamier).
Tools you will need
- Small saucepan
- Whisk or wooden spoon
Ingredients
- 1 cup milk (any, but preferably cow’s milk)
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp pure maple syrup
- 2 tsp collagen powder
- 2 tbsp cacao powder
- Optional: 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
Method
- Heat saucepan over low to medium heat and pour in milk
2. Add butter to milk
3. Wait until butter is melted in and stirred before pouring in maple syrup
4. Stir in maple syrup
5. Once maple syrup is stirred in, add in dry ingredients
6. Let it simmer for 3-5 minutes before serving
Why every mama needs a pick-me-up drink like this
As mamas, we use up a lot of energy throughout the day (whether it be from breastfeeding, chasing toddlers or dealing with emotional teenagers!). Our bodies require fuel that will sustain our hunger hormones, satisfy our rollercoaster female hormones and stabilise our blood sugar levels.
This tasty chocolate mineral milk meets all three needs.
It sustains hunger hormones by providing a range of nutrients in one drink (collagen, good fat from butter, protein from milk and magnesium from cacao).
It balances our blood sugar levels by giving us a good source of fat and protein that won’t spike glucose levels and will leave us feeling full for a while.
When our hunger hormones and blood sugar levels are stable, it supports our overall hormone health.
Notes
Some things to note about this recipe:
Like I said, you can use alternative swaps based on your preference or dietary requirements. If this is the case, here is what I would suggest to optimise the quality and taste of the chocolate mineral milk.
If you are using an alternative nut milk, I would add in an extra 0.5 tsp of collagen, 0.5 tsp cacao and 0.5 tbsp butter for more creaminess.
If you are using honey instead of maple syrup, I would add an extra 0.5 tsp for extra sweetness, as I find that maple syrup is a little sweeter (however, this is dependent on the brand).
If you are using unflavoured collagen, I would add some more maple syrup, as the vanilla collagen I use is quite sweet.
If you like your chocolate milk extra thick, add in 1 tsp of corn flour to thicken it.
